US-Iran talks collapse, war escalates; Iran seeking nukes?; Russia hits Kyiv - THE ASIA PIVOT - 3-Jun-2026

Iran Has Not Talked With U.S. For Days, Believes War Is Inevitable

Exchanges of messages between Iran and the United States related to efforts to reach a memorandum of understanding have been halted for at least several days now, the Fars News Agency reported on June 2, citing an informed source.

The source told the semi-official news agency that recent media reports and statements by some Western officials portraying communications between Tehran and Washington as routine "do not reflect the current reality."

[...]

The Iranian decision to suspend the exchange of messages with the U.S. was first reported a day earlier by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, which also said that the decision was taken in response to Israeli escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

U.S. President Donald Trump intervened on the same day, stopping Israel from resuming strikes on the Lebanese capital, Beirut. He even boasted that talks with Iran were progressing "at a rapid pace."

Iran and the US Trade More Blows in the Persian Gulf

The tensions between the US and Iran remain very taut after both sides exchanged of fire late on June 2 (early morning June 3 in the Persian Gulf). It apparently started when a US helicopter tried to stop an Iranian tanker headed for the port of Bandar Abbas. The US helo launched a hellfire missile that reportedly hit the engine room and disabled the tanker. In addition, the US also hit an Iranian communications tower on Qeshm Island.

Iran wasted no time responding... the IRGC released the following statement:

Late last night, the invading US military targeted an Iranian oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz with a hellfire missile, damaging the engine room.

In response to this aggression and violation of the regulations of the Strait of Hormuz, the IRGC targeted an enemy Zionist-American ship, the 'Panaya', with missiles.

In a renewed aggression, the American enemy also targeted an IRGC communications on Qeshm Island.

In response to this aggression, its airbase and its helicopter base stationed in one of the countries in the region (Kuwait), as well as the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, were subjected to an attack by missiles and drones of the IRGC Aerospace Force.

We warned previously that in the event of aggression, the response would be different and harsher, and we have acted accordingly. These responses should serve as a lesson.

We reaffirm that undermining the security of the Strait of Hormuz will cost the invading U.S. military a heavy price.'

While CENTCOM claimed that US forces shot down all Iranian missiles, video footage from Kuwait tells a different story, with at least three visible missile impacts on the ground. There is no news of casualties.

Despite the violence, US officials largely ignored the clash, although CENTCOM issued the following statement.

Iranian Missiles Rain Over Gulf After U.S. Attack On Tanker (Videos)

Iran carried out a powerful attack against United States bases in the Persian Gulf over the night of June 2 and 3 in response to American strikes.

The escalation began when the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces had enforced "blockade measures" against the Botswana-flagged tanker Lexie as it transited international waters toward Kharg Island in the Islamic Republic.

[...]

Right after the strike, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had carried out "precise and concentrated missile strikes" targeting a base hosting U.S. forces in Kuwait.

[...]

Right after, the IRGC said in a statement that its forces launched missiles at the Liberian-flagged container ship MSC Panaya in response to the American strike on Lexie. According to maritime traffic data, the ship last known position is off the shores of Bahrain.

The guards added that an American helicopter base in a regional country and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, were also targeted in response to strikes that hit a communications tower in southern Qeshm Island.

[...]

The helicopter base mentioned by the IRGC is reportedly Camp Buehring, a massive staging ground for the U.S. military's Middle Eastern Theater Reserve in Kuwait.

CENTCOM reported the interception of "an additional wave of Iranian drones attempting to attack U.S. forces in Kuwait" later in the morning, stressing again that "no American personnel or assets were harmed."

Still, impacts were confirmed in Manama, and Kuwait admitted that its main international airport took some serious damage.

IRGC Quds Force chief warns Bab al-Mandab will become like Strait of Hormuz

The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Quds Force, Brigadier General Esmail Qa'ani, has warned that the Bab al-Mandab Strait will be subjected to the same traffic restrictions as the Strait of Hormuz if the Zionist regime continues its crimes in Lebanon and Gaza under American protection.

[...]

The Bab al‑Mandab Strait, located between Yemen and the Horn of Africa, is a critical chokepoint for global shipping, particularly for oil tankers.

Does Iran Have a Nuke? Well Placed Source Says, "Yes"

Let me emphasize that I firmly support past US intel community assessments that Iran, until now, had no interest in obtaining a nuke.

However, it appears that the surprise attack on 28 February, which followed the aborted color revolution attempted in late December 2025, played a decisive role in changing Iran's view on this matter.

Israeli forces killed at least 119 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in May, the highest monthly death toll recorded this year, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

At least 19 children and 10 women were among those killed in May, the ministry said on Tuesday.

During the past 24 hours alone, 11 new Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement were recorded, resulting in Palestinian deaths and injuries, according to local media.
